In Memoriam.
Mrs. Esther A. McCracken, wife of Mr. Joseph Mehaffy of this city, died May 4, 1901. She had been confined to her bed several days, but death came very unexpectedly to her family and friends. When it was realized that the end was near it was too late to secure the presence of the absent sons before their mother’s death. The bereaved husband and children are in sorrow, but they sorrow not as those who have no hope.
Mrs. Mehaffy was born of Christian parents. Early in life she gave herself to Christ. She was for thirty-five years a member of the Reformed Presbyterian church, for nineteen years a member of the R. P. congregation of Morning Sun. She was naturally of a retiring disposition. This together with bodily infirmities led her to confine herself largely to her home. There she was queen. She was a faithful wife and mother. “Her children rise up and call her blessed, her husband also and he praiseth her.” Hers was a happy disposition. She was humble and meek. She was gentle and kind. Though often afflicted she did not complain. She will be greatly missed in the home from which she was seldom absent, and in the church of which she was a faithful member.
Mrs. Mehaffy was born in Kortright, New York, July 13, 1844, and was 56 years, 9 months, and 21 days old at her death. She was married to Mr. Joseph Mehaffy January 18, 1865. She came to Iowa in 1879 and was a resident of Morning Sun since 1882. She was the mother of four children, all living, viz: Susie Etta and J. Arthur, of this city, James H., principal of schools, Prescot, Iowa, and J. Milton, student of University, Iowa City.
The funeral services were held at the home Monday, May 6, conducted by her pastor, C. D. Trumbull, assisted by Dr. T. P. Robb. The interment was in Elmwood cemetery.
