Death of Grant Swartz
Grant Swartz passed suddenly and unexpectedly away at Mercy hospital at Davenport, Saturday morning, May 11th, 1901. He had gone to the hospital for an operation with the hope that it would be the means of restoring him to perfect health. It was discovered on Friday, the 10th, that his strength was rapidly giving way, and though every attention and care was given him that could possibly be rendered, he finally succumbed at an early hour on the 11th. His faithful wife and brother Harry were at his bedside when the end came.
Grant Swartz was born in the state of Ohio, September 4th, 1864. He came with his father’s family to Iowa in 1876 and settled in the vicinity of Morning Sun, and in this locality he has resided ever since. He was well and favorably known and had the universal respect of all. He was a young man of sterling integrity, industrious habits, sincere bearings, generous nature and reliable in every point of life.
On the 24th of January last he was united in marriage with Mrs. May Edgington-Hahn; this relation was severed by his death in a few days more than three months. He is also survived by his father, and brothers John and Harry Swartz, likewise by four sisters, Mr. J. McK, McClurkin, Mrs. E. D. Gawthorp, Mrs. Charles Curran and Mrs. Sam Delzell.
He was connected with the civic order of Woodmen, of which he was a devoted member. He made a profession of his faith in Jesus Christ and died triumphant in the merits of his Savior, in whom he believed.
The funeral was from the Presbyterian church Monday afternoon at 2:00 o’clock and was conducted by Rev. S. H. Parvin, who spoke from I Samuel, 20th chapter and 3rd verse: “There is but a step between me and death.” After the services, the order of Woodmen took charge of the remains, and their burial ceremony was rendered at the grave.
In this sad providence the entire family have the deepest sympathy of the community.
