Spates rites on Thursday

Services for Charles D. Spates, 68, 406 W. Kirkwood, will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the United Methodist Church. The Rev. Clair Odell will officiate and burial will be in the Cemetery at Letts.

Visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the United Methodist Church.

Spates, who had been a resident of Fairfield for 48 years, died at 12:45 a.m. Tuesday at the University Hospitals in Iowa City. He had been ill for some time.

Until his retirement he had been employed as a research and development engineer at ACCO Babcock Inc., formerly Loudens for a number of years. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church and VFW, and he was a veteran of World War II.

Charles D. Spates was born June 18, 1916, in Oskaloosa. He was the son of Charles A. and Nina Stringfellow Spates. He was married to I. Littrel Sept. 23, 1939, at the Methodist Church in Fairfield.

Survivors include his widow; a son, Lloyd Spates, Keosauqua; a daughter, Leah Canfield, Fairfield; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers.
