Harold McElhinney

Harold Lane McElhinney, 74, of Morning Sun, died Monday, October 18, 2004 at his home. The son of Martin and Ruth Lane McElhinney, he was born August 15, 1930, in rural Morning Sun (Iowa).

He married Nancy Joan Kerr on June 30, 1953, in Morning Sun.

He attended school at Yarmouth (Iowa) and graduated from Morning Sun High School in 1949.

He worked at the Morning Sun Grain; the Yarmouth Elevator; JI Case in Burlington; the Ordnance Plant in Middletown, and at U.S. Gypsum, all before working for many years at Mutual Telephone Co. of Morning Sun, both as a lineman and retiring as the manager.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church and the MYF of Morning Sun and the Morning Sun Lions Club. He had served on the Morning Sun Zoning Committee and was a Boy Scout Leader and had coached Little League.

He enjoyed gardening, landscaping, woodworking, and camping.

Survivors include his wife; three sons, Kirk and Teri McElhinney of Forrest Lake, Minnesota, Bruce and Sharon McElhinney of Davenport and Brent and Erika McElhinney of Morning Sun; five grandchildren, Kara, Lindsay, Kyle, Taryn, and Thayne; two brothers, Bill McElhinney of Morning Sun and Hubert McElhinney of Crawfordsville; and five sisters, Dorothy Kerr of Wapello, Celia Murphy of West Burlington, Gladys Parish of Wapello, Pauline Metzger of Morning Sun and Verla Bigger of Media, Illinois.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Dale and a sister, Ola Lambert.

The funeral service is at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, October 21, at the United Methodist Church in Morning Sun with the Revs. Harlan W. Winter and Chris Thomas officiating. Burial will follow in the Elmwood cemetery in Morning Sun.

Visitation was Wednesday at the Hagele and Honts Funeral Home in Morning Sun, where the family met with friends from 6-8 p.m.

A memorial has been established for the benefit of the United Methodist Church.
