Alvin Wharton Jennings was born on the Jennings homestead in Louisa County. Iowa, March 13. 1858 and thence departed this life September 26, 1925, aged 67 years, 6 months and 13 days.
He was married to Isabelle Hester, January 25, 1883. To this union was born seven children, Lois, wife of O.C. Buffington; Verdie, wife of R.M. Buffington; Bruce A., Boyd B.; one who died in infancy; Donald D. and Jeff M., all of this community. He is also survived by 18 grandchildren
and one great granddaughter. His parents Benjamin and Nancy Jeffries Jennings came to Iowa as pioneers in 1854 and made their home in the same location where his home is now. They were the parents of eleven children, four of whom survive, W. H. Jennings of Lincoln, Nebraska; Taylor Jennings; of Van Meter, Iowa; Enoch Jennings of Van Meter, Iowa; Mrs. Ellen Trindle, of Salem, Oregon; and also one half sister, Mrs. Ginevra Johnston, of Columbus City, Iowa mourns his loss.
Mr. Jennings was a successful farmer and stock raiser and always took an active interest in public affairs as did his father, the latter having been one of the twelve first supervisors appointed in this county.For more than twenty years, A. W. Jennings was secretary of the school board and at various times held all of the township offices. An invalid for several years he bore his suffering with great fortitude. He went through long hours of suffering, and in that time it came to him the consciousness of the love of God and the compassionate sympathy of the Christ.
