Sketch of Mrs. W. O. Duryea

Mary Howe was born in London, England, April 25, 1865, and died December 12, 1922, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. James E. Wilson, near Wapello.

She came with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Howe, and her sister, Anne, to this country in 1880, settling on a farm in Illinois. Later they moved to Iowa, to a farm near Columbus Junction, September 25, 1889.

She leaves her husband and four daughters: Mrs. L. G. Owens of Laurel, Iowa; Mrs. W. O. Yohe of Morning Sun, Mrs. James E. Wilson and Mrs. Lawrence Jack of Wapello; also her father, mother and sister.

The funeral services were held from her late home in Morning Sun at 2 p.m., Thursday, December 14th, conducted by Reverend W. P. Nicholas, assisted by members of the Presbyterian choir. The chapter read by her pastor, the fourteenth of John, was the Bible lesson, and the one she always thought the most comforting.

When a girl in England, Mrs. Duryea united with the Episcopal church and has often spoken of the pleasure she took in attending all the services. After her marriage she joined the First Presbyterian church of Morning Sun, of which church she was a member at the time of her death.

Her going has caused the first break in the family circle, and although her chair is vacant, the memory of her will abide, and her loving care for her children and her sympathy for everyone will never be forgotten.
