Janet Utter

Janet Anne Utter, 53, of Columbus Junction, Iowa, died Tuesday, December 23, 2003, at the Colonial Manor Care Center in Columbus Junction (Iowa). Memorial services were held Saturday at the Stacy-Lewis Funeral Home, Columbus Junction, Iowa. Rev. Cathy Whitlatch officiated. A memorial has been established in her name for a Stuffed Animal donation to the University of Iowa Pediatric Center in Iowa City (Iowa). She was born November 28, 1950 in Washington, DC, the daughter or Roy Glynn and Iris Maxine (Bethel) Allman. She graduated from Iowa State University in 1972 with a degree in Education, and then married Thomas Utter on July 22, 1972 in Arlington, Virginia, spending the rest of her life on the farm in Columbus Junction, Iowa. She was a member of the United Methodist Church, the Indian Creek Club, Breast Cancer support groups, Trees Forever, and Pheasants Forever. She participated in the Louisa County Fair and could be find substituting at school, working at the H & R Block and in later years at GIP’s Consignment. She was chosen as the “Cherry Blossom Princess.” She loved her family dearly and enjoyed all the events her children were involved in. Her friends were very important to her throughout her life. Anyone who knew her, knew how much of an avid bargain hunter she was. She was lovingly called the “Queen of Bargains.” Her fame carried on throughout her life as she struggled with Breast Cancer for 10 ½ years. In 2002 she had the opportunity to carry the Olympic torch. She fought cancer determinedly to the end, it was stated many times at the University that Janet had received the most treatment of anyone they knew.

She will be deeply missed by her 3 children: Sara Anne Utter and fiancé, Jeffrey Carder, of Clovis, New Mexico, William Richard Utter of Oskaloosa, Iowa, and Katie Glynn Utter of Columbus Junction (Iowa); her mother, Maxine Allman, of Phoenix, Arizona; her grandmother, Callie Hesseltine; 3 brothers, Roy Allman of Stuart, Florida, Don Allman and his wife, Mary Ann of Fairfax Station, Virginia, and John Allman and his wife, Teddy Ann of Stuart, Florida; her sister, Helen Allman of Euless, Texas; and her father and mother-in-law, Richard and Phyllis Utter of Columbus Junction (Iowa). She is preceded in death by her husband, Tom, in 1998 and her father, Roy Allman.
