Samuel Charles Thie, 97, of Mediapolis passed away Tuesday, October 21, 2014, two days before his 98th birthday. He was a resident of Prairie Ridge Care Center in Mediapolis. The son of Samuel H. and Ruby Young Thie, he was born October 23, 1916 on the family farm near Mediapolis. Sam graduated from Mediapolis High School as salutatorian of his class. In 1938, he graduated from Burlington Junior College.
As a First Sergeant in the U.S. Army, Sam was stationed in Bermuda during W.W.II in the 423rd Anti-Aircraft Artillery Battalion. He married Phyllis Madden June 17, 1943 in Hamilton, Bermuda. They later divorced. On October 12, 1972 he married Lora Elliot of Wapello. She preceded him in death on February 14, 2010.
Sam was the oldest remaining member of the Thie family who has resided in north Des Moines County for seven generations. Sam farmed west of Mediapolis. Upon retiring from farming, he and Lora moved to Arkansas where he became a realtor with Realty World in Mena, and was mayor of Hatfield, Arkansas. In 1995, Sam and Lora returned to the Mediapolis area. They were members of the Kingston United Methodist Church and Des Moines County Farm Bureau. Sam was an avid reader and a master gardener, especially roses and irises. He enjoyed taking floral arrangements to church.
He loved his family and is survived by his daughter, Marlene (Barry Lingle) Reynolds of Somonauk, Illinois; two step-daughters, Linda (Delbert) Dotson of Wapello; and Jeanie (Walter) Kaszubski of New Lenox, Illinois and his sons, Bernard (Marcia) Thie of Mediapolis.
He leaves nine grandchildren; Michael Dotson, Lonnie Reynolds, Kevin Reynolds, Adam Kaszubski, Paul Kaszubski, Sarah Kilpatrick, Marissa Thie Reed, Benjamin Thie, and Matthew Thie; nineteen great-grandchildren, and three great-great grandchildren. His brother, Hugh (“Hick”) Thie, who resided with him at Prairie Ridge, also survives him along with several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, a sister (Marguerite Anderson), two granddaughters, and a great-granddaughter. Per Sam’s wishes, there will be a private family remembrance. His body has been cremated and entrusted to Hagele and Honts Funeral Home.
