Gazette: L.J. Derby, a son-in-law of Mr. Damuel Reaney, of Concord township, was suddenly killed last Thursday afternoon near Humboldt, Iowa, when the automobile in which he was riding was struck by a Chicago & Northwestern train. Just how the accident occurred will probably never be known. Mr. Derby was an unusually careful driver and his friends are unable to understand how the accident occurred. Mr. and Mrs. Derby formerly lived at Washington but for the past three years they have lived at Swea City.

Mrs. Derby's father, Samuel Reaney, departed Thursday evening for Swea City and accompanied by the sorrowing wife and children and Mr. Derby's mother, they brought the body to Washington where funeral services were held Sunday at the Miller chapel, conducted by Rev. L.M. Grigsby of the Methodist church. Interment was in the Elm Grove cemetery.

Mr. Derby was born at Shaftsbury, Vermont, January 11, 1874. He came to Iowa at an early age and in 1898 he was united in marriage to Miss Mary Reaney, of this county. His father died about twelve years ago. He is survived by his wife and mother and three children, Anna Marie, Rosa May, and Charles. He is also survived by one sister, Mrs. D.O. Harrison, of Muscatine.
