ENOCH POTTER PASSES AWAY.
Was Among the Oldest Pioneers of Louisa County.

Enoch Potter, one of the oldest pioneers in Louisa county, died at his home in Morning Sun, Tuesday evening of this week. Old age was the cause of his death, he having passed his ninety-first birthday last September. He underwent the removal of his left arm a short time ago on account of a cancerous growth on his hand, and this no doubt lessened his days. The funeral services will be held from the Harrison United Presbyterian church, near Wapello, Thursday Dec. 23d, at 1:30 p. m., and will be conducted by his pastor, Rev. Fred Elliott, of the local church. The interment will take place in the Harrison cemetery.
Mr. Potter was born in Beaver county, Penn., Sept. 13, 1819, and came of sturdy Scotch-Irish ancestry. He was married in 1846 and with his wife came to Iowa by steamboat in 1851, making the trip down the Ohio river from Pittsburg, Pa., to St. Louis and then up the Mississippi. It took two weeks to make the trip and they reached Muscatine after a momentous journey, and settled on a piece of land near West Liberty. In 1855 they took up a claim a couple of miles east of Wapello. Here they endured the hardships and privations of early pioneer days. That home was one of utmost hospitality.
They came to Morning Sun a few years ago to spend their declining years. Mrs. Potter died in 1895.
Mr. Potter was a well-read man, and being possessed of a vigorous memory, always had a great fund of information at hand. He took an active part in politics in early life, and served as a member of the Board of Supervisors of Louisa county in an early day, and was elected as a republican to the House of Representatives of the Tenth General Assembly of Iowa.
One daughter and four sons mourn the death of the father,— Mrs. J. P. McClanahan of Morning Sun, Rev. C. C. Potter of Des Moines, O. N. Potter of Xenia, Ohio, and Geo. S. and L. K. Potter of Wapello.
