Joanne Bonnichsen Garlock, 87, passed away July 27, 2013, at Iowa Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines. A graveside service was held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, at Chapel Hill Cemetery in Des Moines.

Jessie Joanne Bonnichsen, the daughter of Thomas Frederick and Elva (Foster) Bonnichsen, was born January 29, 1926 in Louisa County. Following her graduation from Grandview High School in 1944, she attended AIC in Davenport. Joanne worked at Farm Bureau, where she met her husband, Bob Garlock. They were married at the First Methodist Church in Des Moines on June 25, 1953. They lived in Beaverdale before moving to Urbandale in 1960.

She and Bob were charter members of Aldersgate United Methodist Church. Joanne liked to garden with Bob and attend their grandson’s sporting events. She was also a terrific bowler and loved walking around Lion’s Park twice each day. She made delicious thumbprint cookies. She enjoyed reminiscing about her growing up days in Louisa County.

Joanne is remembered by her sons, Paul of Des Moines, and Ronald (LaRon) of Johnston; grandsons, James and Ben of Johnston; her brothers, Raymond and Royce of Columbus Junction; and her sister, Faithe Walters of Eldora.

Joanne was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Robert “Bob” in 2010; and her sisters, Lucile in childhood, Carol Schafer in 1990 and Frances McKean in 2004.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to Aldersgate United Methodist Church.
