Laura Baker Luckey, 91, formerly of Washington, IA and Louisa County, passed away June 20, 2013 at Phelps Memorial Hospital in Sleepy Hollow, NY.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. Inurnment will be in the Columbus City Cemetery. Stacy- Lewis Funeral Home in Columbus Junction is in charge of local arrangements. Memorials may be directed to the Senior Center in Washington.

Laura A. Baker was born October 24th, 1921 and raised on a farm near Grandview, IA, the daughter of William and Vera (Combs) Baker. After graduating from Parson’s College in 1941, she taught at Frendale Country School in rural Louisa County and at Columbus City Elementary School. She married Robert Luckey, formerly of Columbus Junction, in 1945 at the Community Church in Grandview.

She worked at the Guthrie Center Public Library from 1959 to 1967. In 1969, she earned a BA from the University of Northern Iowa. Following her graduation, Mrs. Luckey taught at Earlham, IA and Panora-Linden Schools. She was school librarian for Guthrie Center Schools from 1972 until her retirement in 1985.

Mrs. Luckey moved to Washington in 1997 where she was a member of the United Presbyterian Church, YWCA, American Association of University Women, Public Affairs Group, Birthday Club, and Sunshine Coffee Club. She volunteered at the Senior Center and the Presbyterian Church Library. She occasionally attended meetings of the Louisa County Retired Teachers Association. In 2009, she moved to New Haven, CT to be near her family.

Survivors include her daughters: Linda (Louis) Fisher of Marblehead, MA and Carol Louise (Tim) Yancey of Garnerville, NY. She is also mourned by her grandchildren, Amy (Chris) Price of Nyack, NY and Chris (Leah) Yancey of Manchester, NH. She delighted in the company of her two great-grandchildren, Madeleine and William Price.

Laura was preceded in death by her parents, William and Vera Baker and her husband, Robert Luckey.
