Thomas Leo Nelson – Morning Sun News-Herald, Thursday, April 25, 2013

Thomas Leo ‘Tom’ Nelson, age 57, of Morning Sun, died Monday evening, April 22, 2013, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City. The son of Melvin A. and Doris Wagner Nelson, he was born on March 3, 1956 in Burlington. He married Tammy Callahan on July 1, 1989 in Morning Sun.

Tom graduated from Mediapolis High School in 1974 and received an Ag degree from Southeastern Community College in West Burlington. He was a lifelong farmer.

He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Dodgeville and attended the First United Presbyterian Church in Morning Sun. He had received the American Farmer Award through FFA and he served on the Sperry Elevator Board. Tom enjoyed the outdoors, landscaping and simply working with his hands.

His family includes his wife, Tammy; his mother, Doris Nelson of Mediapolis; a sister, Chris and Gary Kupferschmid of Mediapolis; two brothers, Randy & Susan Nelson of Sperry and Steve & Tracy Nelson of Mediapolis; and adored by many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father and an infant sister.

The funeral ceremony for Thomas Nelson will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 27, 2013 at the First United Presbyterian Church in Morning Sun with Rev. Jack Edmission and Ramona Wink, CLP officiating. Cremation will follow the services.

Friends may call from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Friday at the Hagele and Honts Funeral Home in Mediapolis where the family will meet friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.

A memorial Fund has been established for the benefit of an FFA Scholarship and the U of I Rossi Guest House.
