Maria del Socorro Gomez, 44, of Columbus Junction, passed away on Sunday, April 21, 2013 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City. The Mass of the Resurrection for Maria will be at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, April 25, 2013 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Columbus Junction. Burial will be at a later date in Durango, Mexico. Casket bearers will be Miguel Gomez, Julian Gomez, Homero Gomez, Armando Mata, Armando Jr. Mata and Antonio Mata. Visitation for Maria will be held on Wednesday, April 24, 2013 from 10:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home, with a Rosary service at 7:00 p.m. A memorial has been established in Maria’s name at the funeral home. Maria del Socorro Aguero was born on May 13, 1968 in La Esmeralda, Durango, México, the daughter of Ramón Aguero Salazar and Esperanza de Santiago García. She was united in marriage to J. Refugio Gomez Lopez in Wapello, Iowa. Maria was a cook at La Reyna and then La Hacienda in Columbus Junction. She was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. Maria was very good at cooking and loved shopping on the weekends. She enjoyed socializing with friends and family, and she was very loving to her children and took very good care of them. She was a resident of Columbus Junction for 23 years.

Maria will be dearly missed by her husband, J. Refugio; her four children, Miguel Gomez, Julian Gomez, Jesús Gomez and Gisell Gomez, all of Columbus Junction; her mother, Esperanza de Santiago Garcia of La Esmeralda, Durango, México; eight siblings, Lorenzo Aguero and his wife, LuzMaria Carrasco, Martin Aguero and his wife, Griselda Reyes, LuzMaria Aguero and her husband, Santiago Raul Altamirano, Maria C. Aguero and her husband, José Soto, her twin sister, Ramona Aguero, Juan Carlos Aguero and his wife, Socorro Ontiveros and Basilia Aguero and her husband, Jorge Luis Rodriguez.
Maria was preceded in death by her father, Ramón Aguero Salazar.
