Vera Mewhirter, 95, of Columbus Junction, passed away at the Colonial Manor Care Center on Friday, March 15, 2013. Services were held at 10:00 A.M. Monday, March 18, 2013 at the Stacy-Lewis Home for Funeral and Cremation Services in Columbus Junction with Pastor Al Coffin officiating. Burial was in Columbus City Cemetery. Visitation was Sunday, March 17th from 4:00-7:00 A.M. at the funeral home. Following the committal services there was a time for food and fellowship at the United Methodist Church. A memorial was established at the funeral home in Vera’s name.

Vera Marie Bliven was born in Columbus Junction on June 15th, 1917, the daughter of Charles Roy and Cecelia Pearl (Hammond) Bliven. She was united in marriage to Harold “Jack” Mewhirter on March 24, 1940 at the Methodist Parsonage in Burlington, IA. She lived her whole life in Columbus Junction and was a life-long member of the Columbus Junction United Methodist Church. Vera had worked in different grocery stores and the Columbus Cleaners. She liked to read and crochet afghans. She especially liked to garden and was a wonderful cook and an excellent seamstress.

Vera will be dearly missed by her sister, Dorothy Kemp from Story City; her sister-in-law, Lois Bliven from Iowa City; and many nieces and nephews, including Kirk Bliven who was her special caregiver.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack, one brother, Harold Bliven and four sisters: Lillian Thompson, Jean Sims, Maxine Clevenger and Margaret Hawley.
