Earl E. Copelan, 90, of Washington, passed away on Monday, January 21, 2013, at the Washington County Hospital. Graveside services for Earl were at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, January 25, 2013, at Indian Creek Cemetery. Visitation for Earl was held on Friday, January 25, from 10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. at the Stacy-Lewis Home for Funeral and Cremation Services in Columbus Junction. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established at the funeral home in memory of Earl. Sympathy notes may be left to the family at www.lewisfuneralhomes.com.

Earl Eugene Copelan was born on October 27, 1922 in Plainville, Illinois, the son of Walter Edgar and Rosa Eulana (Dixon) Copelan. Earl was a 1941 graduate of Bowen High School. He served in the United States Army from June 15, 1943 –March 6, 1946 as a Sargent in the 867th Anti-Aircraft Battalion in the Hawaiian Islands. On August 10, 1968, Earl was united in marriage to Erma Carey in Burlington. Earl retired from Farm Service and also helped the softball association, making sure the fields were ready by game time. Earl enjoyed fishing with his friends, bowling in leagues and spending time with his family, especially the grandsons.

Earl will be dearly missed by his wife, Erma of Washington; daughter, Vickie Bender of Washington; two grandsons, Drake and Jarrett Bender; and one sister, Violet Schmell of Centerville.

Earl was preceded in death by his parents and three sisters, Vera Settles, Eileen Tanner and Florence Dobbins and one brother, Dale Copelan.
