Smith, Joan Huston, 86, of Columbus Junction, passed away on Monday, January 7, 2013, at the Colonial Manor Care Center of Columbus Junction. Funeral services were Friday, January 11, 2013, at 10:00 a.m. at the Stacy-Lewis Home for Funeral and Cremation Services in Columbus Junction. Burial was in the Columbus City Cemetery. Visitation for Joan was held on Friday, January 11, 2013, from 9:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to the American Stroke Foundation in memory of Joan. Joan Huston was born on September 26, 1926, in Washington, Iowa the daughter of Harold Lee and Charlotte Juanita (Prizer) Huston. On October 20, 1945, Joan was united in marriage to Marshall E. Smith in Columbus Junction. Joan was a homemaker, the manager of the print center at McGladrey, Hanson and Dunn Company and later was a State Representative for two years.

Joan was a member of St. John’s United Methodist Church and P.E.O. in Davenport, a board member for the Cerebral Palsy Foundation and the Friendly House in Davenport and President of the Scott County Girl Scouts. Joan enjoyed politics, listening to politics on the radio, gardening, reading, cooking, history, and traveling, but most of all; Joan dearly loved to spend time with her family.

Joan will be dearly missed by her children, Susan Lee Smith of Davenport, Sara Smith Hirsch and her husband, Allen of Oakland, CA and Ellen Smith Dockter and her husband, Mark of Aurora, CO; two grandchildren, Samuel Zachary Hirsch and Peter Andrew Hirsch; and one brother, Thomas H. Huston and his wife, Kay of Columbus Junction.

Joan was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.
