JOHN S COON passed away Sunday morning, January 22, 1984 at the Long Term Care Center in Washington where he had been a resident for the past two years.

Funeral services were held at the United Presbyterian Church January 24 with the Rev. Denley GANFIELD in charge. Organist Marjorie FULLERTON and Paul DUNCAN provided music. Pallbearers were grandsons, Dan, David, Dennis, Tom and Ricky COON and John KLEESE. Honorary pallbearers were Jim SWANSON, Don EICHELBERGER, Carl LEE, and Raymond KOTTKAMP. Interment was at the Columbus City Cemetery with Stacy-Lewis Funeral Home in charge.

John was the son of John L and Mary Elizabeth MAGEE COON. He was born December 21, 1895, in Champagne County, Illinois and moved to Iowa with his family in 1898. On May 23, 1917, he married Luella HOOVER. They were the parents of two sons, John Richard and Robert Jack of Fairfield.

John was a retired Louisa County farmer, moving to Columbus Junction in 1951, and had worked for the Iowa Department of Transportation for several years until retirement. He was also employed at Colton Electric for several years.

He was baptized at the Central Presbyterian Church in 1903 and was a life member of this church, being the eldest living member at the time of his death. He had served terms as Elder and Trustee of his church and was an active member throughout his entire membership. John was a veteran of World War I serving with the Army at Fort Dodge.

He was preceded in death by his wife; son Richard; his parents; four brothers, two in infancy, and Roy and A L COON of Morning Sun; one sister, May IBBOTSON of Winfield. Survivors include son, Robert of Fairfield; a sister Audrey PILLEREN, of South Carolina; 10 grandchildren, and 17 great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
