Melvin Nelson

Melvin A. Nelson, 75, of Mediapolis, died Saturday, March 1, 2003, at Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.

The son of Harry and Clara Pflum Nelson, he was born January 23, 1928 in Burlington. He was a 1945 graduate of Mediapolis High School. On November 17, 1951, he married Doris Wagner at St. Mary’s Church in Dodgeville.

He was a farmer, past director of the Farm Bureau, past president of the Des Moines County Pork Producers, director of Iowa State Bank, director of Iowa Swine Testing Station, and in 1959 Des Moines County Outstanding Young Farmer.

He was a member of St. Mary’s Church in Dodgeville.

Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Chris Kupferschmid and husband Gary of Mediapolis; three sons, Randy and wife Susan Nelson of Sperry, Tom and wife Tammy Nelson of Morning Sun; Steve and wife Tracy Nelson of Mediapolis; and eight grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant daughter.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary’s Church with the Rev. Pat Lumsden officiating. Music will be provided by Bill Luckenbill, organist, and Jennifer Meller, vocalist. Pallbearers are Bob Buckman, Jim Howell, Ron Stover, Frank Umthun, Chuck Kutlow and Joe Schulte. Honorary bearers are Gerald Stevens, Dale Petersen, Dave Breon and Joe Beckman. Interment will follow at St. Mary’s Church Cemetery.

Visitation was Wednesday at the Hagele and Honts funeral Home in Mediapolis where the family met with friends from 5 to 8 p.m..

Memorials have been established for St. Mary’s Church of the Mediapolis FFA.
