Vesta Elizabeth Carey, 97, of Letts, Iowa, passed away at Colonial Manor in Columbus Junction, Iowa, on Monday, July 30, 2012.

She was born October 15, 1914, at Hope, Arkansas to Elmo and Hazel (Brown) Osburn. She was married to Royce (Red) Carey in 1933. Red passed away in 1992. Red and Vesta raised, trained and raced standard bred horses throughout the United States. They had raced in Iowa, Illinois, Missouri, Ohio, Kentucky, Arizona and Kansas. They had a great time and many friends all over the United States. She was a great cook, everyone like to eat at her house.

Those left to cherish her memory are daughter, Charlotte (Jerry) Hamilton, Letts; grandchildren, Kim (Wally) Johnson, Momence, Illinois; Mitch (Janet) Hamilton, New Boston; Lesa (Rick) Peters, Grinnell; Tracy (Mike) McVey, Wellman; great-grandchildren, Nick (Jessica) Roland, Grinnell; Will (Becky) Roland, Gilman; Tessa Roland, Hamburg, NY; Leah Roland, Grinnell; Kelsey McVey, Iowa City; Dan and Spencer McVey, Wellman; great-great-grandchildren, Ethan Roland, Delanie Roland and Jackson Roland; brother and sister-in-law, Keith and Katherine Carey of Columbus Junction and Muriel Carey of Aledo, Illinois. Also, many, many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; daughter, Rose Ann and sister, Nancy Jane.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to: Colonial Manor, Columbus Junction, Iowa.

Graveside services were at Indian Creek Cemetery on Monday, August 6, 2012, at 2 p.m. Lunch was served at the Letts Community Center.
