Mr. John C. McCleary was born Oct. 28, 1836 in Louisa county.

Died at Muscatine Oct. 3, 1907, being 70 years, 11 months and three days of age.

He was united in marriage with Georgenia C. Davis June 8, 1856. From this union was born six children. Four of whom are living: Abram, of Washington; John D. and George W., of Muscatine; Mrs. L.S. Grasham, of Wapello. The other two preceded him in death, Filander, dying in infancy; Charles C. grew to manhood, died March 19, 1903.

Besides these four children he is survived by his wife and one brother, George, of Indian Territory; one sister, Mrs. H.B. Chamberlain, of Grandview, and fifteen grandchildren and one great-grand-child. Besides these a host of friends and other relatives mourn his loss.

Mr. and Mrs. McCleary united with the Methodist Episcopal church of Grandview and later was transferred by letter to the M.E. church of South Muscatine.

The earlier part of his life was spent on a farm south of Grandview. His failing health made it necessary to leave his farm, after which he moved to Muscatine, where he spent the remainder of his life.

His kind and social manner has gained for him many friends especially among the children with whom he was a great favorite.

After a brief service at the home on West Third street, the remains were taken by the M.N. and S. railway to Grandview, where services were held at 1:30 o'clock from the M. E. church after which interment was made in the Grandview cemetery. Rev. Conant, of Muscatine, officiating.
