Fern E. Smith

Fern Elizabeth Smith, 92, a resident of Prairie Village in Wapello, died Sunday morning, October 19, 2003, at Great River Medical Center in West Burlington. The daughter of Charles and Kathern Marley Mason, she was born January 9, 1911, at Yarmouth, Iowa. She married John W. Smith on August 6, 1927, at Oquawka, Illinois. He preceded her in death.

She was an active farm wife and after retirement from the farm the couple moved into Mount Pleasant where she did housekeeping at the ST Hall at Iowa Wesleyan College.

She was of the Methodist faith.

Fern enjoyed her family.

Survivors include a son, Rollyce Smith of Mediapolis, two granddaughters, Cindy Phillips of Mediapolis and Candy Hook of Wapello; three great-grandchildren, Kecia Lamm, Dusty Prottsman and Matt Little; and five great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one brother, one sister, one half-brother, and an infant great-grandson.

There will be no visitation or funeral service. Following cremation, burial will take place at a later time at the Trinity Cemetery, Mount Union.

A memorial fund has been established for the benefit of the Wapello Community Ambulance Service.

The Hagele and Honts Funeral Home in Mediapolis is providing the care and arrangements.
