Sudden Death of Mrs. G. L. Swan
The friends and relatives here of
Mrs. Geo. L. Swan were saddened Sunday
by word of her sudden death at
the family home in Mediapolis, that
day. She had been about her usual
duties at the hotel during the forenoon
but not feeling well went upstairs after
dinner to lie down awhile. Soon
afterwards one of her daughters found
her in a serious condition, she having
been stricken w i t h apoplexy, from
which she did recover but died within
an hour afterwards.
Jennie Gregory, daughter of David
and Marietta Gregory, was born in Indianapolis,
Indiana, on May 8th, 1861,
and died at Mediapolis, Iowa, February
10th, 1918, aged 56 years, 9 months
and 2 days. When about 8 years old
she removed to Iowa with her parents,
locating in Louisa county.
She was married to George L. Swan
on September 8th, 1880, at her home
near Morning Sun. They located on a
farm in the neighborhood, where they
remained for several years. In the
spring of 1909 Mr. and Mrs. Swan located
at Mediapolis. To this union
were born seven daughters and one
son, as follows: Jessie May, now Mrs.
F. A. Moyers, Wapello; Lulu Maude,
now Mrs. E. E. Owens, Mt. Union;
Cora Belle, deceased; Lillie Blanche,
Bertha Edna, Leah Ethel, Ona Emma,
and Paul Chester, all of Mediapolis.
Beside the husband and children, six
grandchildren survive, together with
two brothers, J. G. Gregory, Morning
Sun, and Grant Gregory, in Canada.
Many friends and relatives sorrow in
common with the bereaved family.
In the fall of 1880 Mrs. Swan united
with the Presbyterian church of Morning
Sun. Her membership was transferred
to the Presbyterian church in Mediapolis
on April 18, 1909 with which she
was identified at the time of her passing.
Mrs. Swan was a devoted wife,
a loving mother, a friend to the needy.
"She looketh well to the ways of her
household and eateth not the bread of idleness.
Her children arise up and call her
blessed; her husband also, and he
praiseth her."
The funeral service was held at the
home in Mediapolis at 12:30 noon on Tuesday.
The funeral party took the 1:17 train
to Morning Sun where at 2 o'clock
service was held in the First
Presbyterian Church, conducted by her
Pastor, the Rev. Philip Palmer, and
assisted by Rev. A.E. Cameron of
the Morning Sun church and by the
Mediapolis choir. Interment was made
at the Elmwood cemetery.
