Genevieve Marguerite Carroll Furlong, 91, of Muscatine, died on Thursday, November 3, 2011, at Carrington Place.

Funeral Mass was 10 a.m. on Monday, November 7, 2011, at the St. Joseph Catholic Church, 107 West Sixth Street, West Liberty. The Reverend Dennis Martin officiated the service. Casket bearers were her children. A time of food and fellowship was held in the parish hall following the mass. Burial took place in St. Malachy Cemetery, Ardon.

Visitation took place from 2 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, November 6, 2011, at the Ralph J. Wittich-Riley-Freers Funeral Home, with a Rosary Prayer Service at 5 p.m. at the funeral home. Genevieve was born on October 16, 1920, in Wilton Township, Muscatine County, the daughter of John and Margaret Kinney Carroll. She graduated from St. Mathias High School in 1938 and the Elementary program at Iowa State Teachers College (UNI) in 1940.

She married Maurice Furlong on June 14, 1947, at St. Mathias Church in Muscatine.

She taught at Bayfield School in Lake Township, Sperry Consolidated School, Jefferson Elementary School in Muscatine, and Letts Consolidated School in Letts. She also farmed alongside her husband for over 60 years.

She was a former member of St. Malachy’s Church of Ardon, and the Altar and Rosary Society. She was a member of the Letts Federated Club, was a 4-H leader, and served on the Muscatine County Board of Health.

Her interests included her grandchildren and their activities, and Iowa history, especially stories of small towns. She passed on her love of education and its importance to her family.

Those left to honor her memory include her husband, Maurice Furlong of Letts; five sons, Joe Furlong of Letts, Tom Furlong and wife, Becky, of Letts, Patrick Furlong and wife, Debby, of Temecula, California, Dan Furlong and wife, Suzy, of Prescott, Arizona, and William Furlong and wife, Meg, of Iowa City; one daughter, Maureen Daley and husband, Tim, of New Hartford; 14 grandchildren, Andrea and Jessica Furlong, Lucas, Jacob and Ezekiel Furlong, Patrick Furlong, Bryce, Karen and Doug Furlong, Meaghan, Erin and Sean Daley, and Anna and Ned Furlong; two great-grandchildren; and one sister, Gertrude Busch of Muscatine.

Genevieve was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Jerry Furlong in 1981; brothers, Francis Carroll and one brother in infancy, John Francis Carroll; and a sister, Helen King Vander Beke.
