G. P. Umphrey Dies Suddenly

New London Resident Dies Following Operation at Mt. Pleasant

New London, Ia., March 10 - G. P. Umphrey, a resident of this community, passed away at the Memorial Hospital in Mt. Pleasant Monday evening at 9:45 following an operation. He was the son of the late Thomas J. and Mary Umphrey and was born December 5, 1897 on a farm in Louisa county.

Oct. 16, 1916 he was married to Miss Maude Mae Walker. For the past eight years Mr. Umphrey had been employed at the West Burlington shops and during his residence in New London has made many friends.

He is survived by his wife, four children, Thelma, Margretta, Thomas and Paul Eugene; three sisters, Mrs. Henry Schwob of Wapello, Mrs. Archie Wolfe of Morning Sun, Mrs. Geo. Houtz of Burlington; three brothers, James and Eber Umphrey of Wapello, Dayton Umphrey of Independence, Mo.

Short services will be held at 11 o'clock Thursday morning in the house followed by services at the M. E. church in Morning [Sun] Sunday at 2 p.m. Interment at Elmwood cemetery.

The ladies of Methodist Protestant church will entertain with an afternoon social in the church Wednesday.

Paul and Miss Leota Walker went to New London Thursday to stay a few days with their sister, Mrs. G. P. Umphrey and children.
