John Geiger was born in Baden, Germany, January 1, 1830, came to this country at the age of two years, living in Pennsylvania until 18 years of age, when he came to Muscatine, residing there and at Letts continuously since. At an early age he was converted, and united with the U.B. church, living a consistent Christian life until death. Socially he was affiliated with Triangular lodge, No. 245, A.F.& A.M.

The last two winters were spent in the south with his daughter, where he met with the fatal accident, Dec. 30, 1904. Those left to mourn the loss of a kind, devoted husband and father are his wife and two daughters, Mrs. J.J. Legler, of Muscatine, and Mrs. R.E. Groff, of Bucklin, Kan., also two granddaugthers, Gertrude Legler and Candice Groff, and three sisters, Mrs. Sarah Yeager of Oxford, Kan., Mrs. Ellen Farrel of Des Moines, Ia., and Mrs. Mary Ecklesh of Los Angeles, Cal.

His life was honest, sincere and unaffected, his friendships were true and lasting, his fidelity to the kingdom of God was marked from the time of his conversion. His family relations were of the most tender and affectionate nature. In every vocation in life he measured up to the standard of a man with all that the term implies of true manhood. He was a devoted husband, a good father and a loving grandfather. A soldier of the republic a conscientious citizen, he leaves, unmeasured by the flight of years, a influence born of God, and deathless as truth must ever be, and so, because of his departure, the evening shadows have a little longer grown.
