Marion W. Steckel, 94, of Davenport, Iowa, died Monday, July 4, 2011 at Genesis Medical Center, West Central Park, Davenport, after a brief illness. Celebration of Life services were held at 11:00 A.M. Friday, July 8th, at First Presbyterian Church, 1702 Iowa Street, Davenport, with Rev. Dr. Richard Miller officiating. Visitation was held from 5-7:00 P.M. Thursday at Weerts Funeral Home, Kimberly at Jersey Ridge Road, Davenport. Interment was in Davenport Memorial Park. Memorial gifts may be made to First Presbyterian Church.

Marion Lorena Williams was born in 1916 in Crawfordsville, Iowa to David R. and Georgia A. Williams. Following her graduation from Crawfordsville High School she earned a teaching degree from the Iowa State Teachers College in 1938. After teaching in several small communities, she settled in the Quad-Cities, teaching physical education at Davenport and Assumption High Schools and Bettendorf Middle School. She was instrumental in establishing several girls’ sports at Bettendorf Middle School and coached volleyball, basketball and track. She taught 34 years.

Marion was a member of Davenport Retired Teachers, volunteered in the Genesis Medical System Auxiliary and was a long-time member of the First Presbyterian Church, where she had served as a Deacon. Marion and her husband were avid Hawkeye sports fans and enjoyed traveling to sporting events.

On July 18, 1948, Marion was united in marriage to Benjamin P. Steckel in Crawfordsville, Iowa. They were married for over 54 years until his death in 2003. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Melanie Steckel and Darrell Orman, Blue Grass, Iowa; son, Jed Steckel, Davenport, Iowa; grandchildren, Christopher and Erin Steckel of Texas, Ben B. Steckel of Davenport, Kathleen (Josh) Chase of Tipton, Iowa; sister-in-law, Elberta Steckel of Madison, Wisconsin; nieces, Annette Beiderman of Minneapolis, Minnesota and Carol Steckel of Madison, Wisconsin.

In addition to her husband, Marion was preceded in death by a son, Joel William Steckel in 1973 and a brother, Wayne Williams in 1984.
