Robert Kiefer

Robert L. Kiefer, 70, Wapello, died Tuesday, July 1, 2003, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City. The son of Silas M. and Adella A. Zimmerman Kiefer, he was born April 2, 1933, at Gridley, Illinois. He married Delores Wuthrich on January 19, 1958, at Pulaski, Iowa.

She graduated from Gridley High School and was a U.S. Army veteran who served in the Korean War in 1955 and 1956 as a mechanic.

He had worked as an auto mechanic, in swine management, and as a field representative for United Duroc Swine Registry out of Peoria. He and his wife then owned and managed the Roy El Motel in Wapello for 27 years.

He was a member of the Oakville Apostolic Christian Church.

He enjoyed fishing, gardening, bees, Syrup and wine. He had a great deal of love for people, with an interest in helping young people grow. He had been actively involved with the Louisa County Habitat for Humanity.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Mark and Mindy Kiefer of Greeley, Colorado and David and Becky Kiefer of Elgin, Illinois; two daughters, Mary Lou of Wapello and Brenda and Jeff Thames of Tremont, Illinois; 16 grandchildren; and a twin brother, Richard Kiefer of Gridley.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

The family will meet friends 1-3 p.m. and 5-7 p.m. Friday at the Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home in Wapello.

Funeral services for Mr. Kiefer will be at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, July 5, at the Apostolic Christian Church at Oakville, with ministers of the church officiating. Pallbearers are Jay Kiefer, Phil Kiefer, Nick Grimm, Miles Kiefer, David Thames, Joshua Thames, Doug Peters, and Richard Kiefer.

Graveside committal and military rites will be at 3 p.m. at the Gridley Township Cemetery at Gridley.

A memorial fund has been established for the benefit of the American Cancer Society, Louisa County Habitat for Humanity and the Apostolic Christian Church at Oakville.
