Steven K. Gerst, 64, of Congerville, Il, died at 12:35 p.m. Wednesday, May 4, 2011, at Advocate BroMenn Eureka Community Hospital. He was a former resident of Oakville, Iowa.

He was born November 3, 1946, in Burlington, Iowa, to Richard and liberty (Frank) Gerst. He married Bonnie Grusy on Jan. 11, 1970, in Congerville.

Surviving are his wife, Bonnie Gerst of Congerville; his children, Tiffany Gerst and Trista (Doug) Ulrich, both of Eureka, and Tadd (Jill) Gerst of Congerville; four grandchildren, Addison and Brooks Ulrich, Selah and Finn Gerst; and three brothers, Wallace (Donna) Gerst of Grand Rapids, Mich.,, Jeffrey Gerst and Kevin (Selena) Gerst, both of Wapello, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Alayna Gerst, and his parents.

He was an Army veteran, serving as a medic at Brooke General Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas, during the Vietnam War.

He was employed by State Farm Insurance Co. in Bloomington in the life accounting department.

Steve gave his life to Christ at the age of 14. He was known for his love and compassion for others and one of his greatest joys in life was his grandchildren.

He was a member of the Goodfield Apostolic Christian Church, where services were held at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 7, 2011, with church ministers officiating.

Visitation was from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, May 6, at the Goodfield Apostolic Christian Church Fellowship Hall. Further visitation was from 9 to 9:45 a.m. Saturday at the church.

Burial was in the Goodfield-Congerville Apostolic Christian Cemetery in Congerville.

Knapp-Johnson Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Morton handled arrangements.

Memorials may be made to the Apostolic Christian Home of Eureka; Apostolic Christian Timer Ridge in Morton or Gateway Woods in Leo, Ind.
