Dorothy M. Black, age 88, of Washington, Iowa died Wednesday, March 30, 2011 at the Washington County Hospitals following a short illness.

Celebration of life services were held 1:30 p.m. Sunday, April 3rd, at the Jones Eden Funeral Home. Visitation began at noon, Saturday at the Jones Eden Funeral Home where the family received friends and family from 4:00 – 6:00 Saturday evening. Interment took place at the Valley Cemetery in rural Washington, Iowa. Memorials have been established for the Washington County Mini Bus or local Elementary School Libraries. Dorothy was born November 7, 1922 in Havre, Iowa the daughter of Howard and Mable (Hotle) Baker. She attended country schools in Washington County. Dorothy was united in marriage to Omar L. Black on August 3, 1941 in Memphis, Missouri.

She was a homemaker and worked with her husband in the family business, Washington Transfer. Dorothy enjoyed her family, quilting, sewing, crocheting, camping, attending the Iowa State Fair, gardening, going for walks and watching birds. She volunteered at area schools for many years. She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary and was a member of a bowling league for several years.

She is survived by seven children: Janet Rees of Columbus Junction, Iowa; Sandra Aggson and husband, Danny of Wellman, Iowa; Connie Baker and husband, Joe of Harper, Iowa; Carmen Black of Washington, Iowa; Karen Blakley and husband, Mike of Libertyville, Iowa; Robert Black and wife, Melody of Wellman, Iowa; and Marsha Drayfahl and husband, Ron of Ainsworth, Iowa. She is also survived by 14 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and one sister, Martha Brown and husband, Kenneth of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, her husband in 2000, son, Daryl Black, infant son, Allen Black, grandson, Bryan Black as well as five siblings; Lucille Ross, Lawrence “Bud” Baker, Helen Brown, Clark “Spark” Baker and Mary Schooley.
