Our community was shocked Saturday to learn of the death of Jesse Day of Union Township. Only a short while before he was seen on our streets seemingly as sound in health as ever and few knew of his sickness until they learned of his death. His sickness was pneumonia and he was afflicted with it only a few days until a (?) termination. Mr. Day was a comparatively young man, having been born in Concord Township in 1860. This made him only thirty four years old at the time of his death. October 17, 1887 he was united in marriage to Miss Mary J. Higginbotham who with three of the four children born to them, survives to mourn a great loss. Mr. Day was a generous, kind hearted man an excellent neighbor and a kind husband and father. He was in all respects a good citizen and a number one man, although not a church member. The funeral was from Pleasant Grove Beth-(?) on Sunday, February 4, at 11 o'clock. The services were conducted by Elder George Stone. The mourning ones have the sympathy of all.

From The Columbus Gazette of Columbus Junction, Iowa on Wednesday, February 7, 1894.
