Leonard W. Duke

Leonard Willibob Duke, 83, of Morning Sun, died 9:553 p.m. Friday, March 11, 2011, at the Morning Sun Care Center, Morning Sun.

Born February 6, 1928 in Burlington, he was the son of Leonard G. and Susie (Lyon) Duke. He married Mary F. Heater on October 12, 1947 in Burlington.

Leonard worked as an electrician for IAAP and previously for Burlington Northern Railroad.

He was a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

His passion was his wife and children. He loved being outdoors and working on the farm. He enjoyed playing the organ and piano, which everyone found soothing. He was an avid reader, focusing mainly on history.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Duke of Morning Sun; his seven children, Bill (Debbie) Duke of San Diego, CA, Kathy (Dennis) Hixson of Bolivar, TN, Moroni Duke of Davenport, John (Michelle) Duke of Milddleton, TN, Lily (Will) Curry of new Virginia, IA, Beth (Steve) Doggett of Ottumwa, and Guy (Cheryl) Duke of Durham, Maine; 18 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren with two on the way; two sisters, Marilyn (Roland) Wehner of Iowa City; and Susan Duke of Sequin, TX; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

The funeral service for Mr. Duke was at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 16th in Lunning Chapel. Pastor Phil Griffith officiated. Interment was in Burlington Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation was Tuesday in Lunning Chapel where the family met with friends in the evening.

A memorial has been established for Morning Sun Care Center or Iowa Hospice.
