Ethel N. Buster, 97, of Wapello and formerly of Grandview, died Saturday evening, May 31, 2003, at the Wapello Nursing & Rehab Center in Wapello. The daughter of John P. and Mary Hahn Kemp, she was born October 16, 1905, in Grandview. She married Dean F. Buster on November 12, 1924, at Muscatine; he preceded her in death on October 28, 1970.

She graduated from Grandview High School in 1923. She taught school in her early years and also did some substitute teaching later. As a minister’s wife she was active in his ministry, especially as a piano player.

Mrs. Buster was a faithful Christian and prayer warrior. Along with her love of playing the piano, she enjoyed many hours doing various handiwork. She was an excellent cook and homemaker, being very devoted to her husband and family.

Survivors include her two sons, Merwin D. and Judy Buster of Eustace, Texas, and Carl L. and Pat Buster of Bettendorf; a daughter, Carolyn and Dave Thompson of Grandview; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; a sister, Ruth Townsley of Donnellson; two sisters-in-law, Idabelle Buster of Wapello and Gwen Slater of Arcadia, California; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband; a daughter, Marilyn Van Amerongen; four sisters, Grace Kopf, Zella Peck, Mabel Kemp and Lila Arihood; and two brothers, Kenneth Kemp and Phillip Kemp.

Services were at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home in Wapello with the Rev. Darryl Erickson officiating. Organ music was provided by Annette Townsley. Vocalists were Becky Sours singing “Lord, I’m Coming Home” and “Beyond the Sunset,” and Robert Van Amerongen singing “If You Could See Me Now.” The congregation sang “How Great Thou Art.”

Burial followed in the Grandview Cemetery. Pallbearers were Robert Van Amerongen, Kenneth Van Amerongen, Travis Buster, Michael Thompson, Paul Kopf and Henry Kopf. Honorary pallbearers were Charles Leibrandt, Clarence Van Amerongen, Richard Van Amerongen, Tom Thompson, Alan Hahn and Will Murphy.

Visitation was Tuesday at the Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home in Wapello where the family met with friends in the evening.

A memorial fund has been established for the benefit of the Grandview Community Bible Church.
