Evert Edwin Vineyard, age 84, of Wapello, died Tuesday November 24, 2009, at the Wapello Nursing and Rehab Center. The son of Tom W. and Lila M. (Wallace) Vineyard, he was born August 17, 1925, in rural Bonaparte, Iowa. He married Esther E. Pender on February 14, 1948; she died December 13, 1982. He was a graduate of the Keosauqua High School, class of 1942. He farmed with his father until he joined the United States Navy in March of 1944, serving until May of 1946. While in the Navy he served in the South Pacific and was involved in several major engagements, including Iwo Jima. Evert farmed for several years until he went to work for Benner Tea Company, where he worked until his retirement in 1983. After retirement he enjoyed spending winters in Texas, traveling, wood working and gardening.

Survivors include: two sons; Ed and Diane Vineyard of Wapello and Earl and Kathi Vineyard of Albuquerque, New Mexico; six grandchildren; Wendi Vineyard, Tanya Patzner, Elizabeth Vineyard, Valerie Vineyard-Gipple, Craig Vineyard, and Brian Vineyard; three great-grandchildren; Jack, Nick, and Brooke Patzner.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, one brother and an infant brother.

The funeral service was held Friday, November 27, 2009, at 10:00 a.m. at the Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home in Wapello, with Rev. Scott Smith officiating. Interment followed at the Bonaparte Cemetery, Bonaparte, Iowa.

Friends called from 9-10:00 a.m. Friday prior to the service at the Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home where the family met with friends.

A memorial in his name has been established for local Veteran Groups.
