James Hugh ‘Jim’ Thomas, age 61, of Morning Sun, Iowa, died Wednesday morning, August 26, 2009, after a long battle with cancer, at the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.

The son of J. Harold and Frances L. Wright Thomas, he was born on February 6, 1948 at Burlington. Jim married Patricia ‘Pat’ Harris on June 25, 1971 at Morning Sun. He graduated from Morning Sun High School in 1966 and attended Southeastern Community College. He was an US Army veteran of the Vietnam War having served in Germany. Jim was a truck driver in partnership with his brother, John at Thomas Trucking of Morning Sun for many years. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church at Morning Sun, the American Legion Hays Scott Post 112 at Morning Sun, and the Indian Hills Golf and Country Club where he had been a past president. He enjoyed NASCAR, golfing, bowling, and the Cubs.

He is survived by his wife, Pat; two daughters, Nicole Thomas Yancey and husband, Bill of Montgomery, Alabama and Brittiny Taylor and husband, Nathan of Bloomfield, Iowa; a son, James Heath Thomas and wife, Kristin of Montgomery, Alabama; two grandchildren, Lillian Harris Yancey and Maximus James Taylor; four sisters, Shirley Kemper and husband, Warren of Wapello, Marie Wilson and husband, Dave of Wapello, Celia McElhinney and husband, Bill of Morning Sun, and Peggy Sever and friend, Tony of Portland, Oregon; two brothers, John Thomas and wife, Ann and Dan Thomas and wife, Lucy both of Morning Sun; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Linda.

Friends called from 2:00 to 6:00 PM on Friday at the Hagele and Honts Funeral Home at Morning Sun. The family met friends from 1:00 to 3:00 PM on Saturday August 29, 2009, at the Church of the Open Bible at 1126 Locust St. in Burlington with the funeral ceremony following at 3:00 PM at the church. Pastor Ken Petersen officiated. Burial followed at the Elmwood Cemetery, Morning Sun with military rites by the American Legion Hays Scott Post 112.

In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established to assist with medical expenses.
