Agnes Theresa Slater, age 95, of Wapello, Iowa, died Wednesday afternoon, December 30, 2009, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City. The daughter of Garret and Teresa Tevoert Bekker, she was born on January 21, 1914, at Nichols, Iowa. She married William L. Slater on January 30, 1937 at Nichols. He preceded her in death on July 7, 1995.

Agnes was a homemaker and farm wife. She enjoyed gardening and various needle works especially counted cross-stitch in recent years. She was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Columbus Junction.

Her family includes three sons, Robert and Louise Slater of Mediapolis, Donald and Sherry Slater of Grandview, and Eugene and Sandi Slater of Grandview; two daughters, Delores and Jim Lid of Anthem, Arizona and Janet Slater of Burlington; a daughter-in-law, Pat Slater of Muscatine; seventeen grandchildren; twenty-seven great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren; and several step-grandchildren and their families. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, William; a son, Maurice; a granddaughter, Marsha; three brothers; and two sisters.

The Funeral Mass for Agnes Slater was held at 10:30 AM on Monday, January 4, 2010, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Columbus Junction with Father Jason Crosen officiating. Burial followed at the Wapello Cemetery.

The family met with friends from 2:00 to 4:00 PM on Sunday at the Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home at Wapello.

A Memorial Fund has been established for the benefit of the Hope Haven Guegler Home at Burlington.
