Dr. Feryl Duane “Doc” Gipple, age 75, of Washington, Iowa, formerly of Crawfordsville, died Saturday, December 20, 2008 at the United Presbyterian Home after declining in health for the past ten years.

Celebration of life services were at 11:00 am Tuesday, December 23rd at the United Presbyterian Church in Washington with Rev. Kitch Shatzer and Rev. Harlan Winter officiating. Interment was at the Cambrian Cemetery in rural Columbus Junction, Iowa. A general memorial has been established. Feryl Duane Gipple was born October 16, 1933 in Louisa County, Iowa the son of Feryl Roderick and Beula Marie (Buffington) Gipple. He graduated from Wyman Consolidated Schools in 1951 and later attended Parsons College in Fairfield for two years. Duane later graduated from Iowa State University in 1960 with a Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine. On March 3, 1954, Duane was united in marriage to Betty Margaret Rees at the Salem Welsh Church in rural Columbus Junction, Iowa. He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict where he served in the United States Army from 1954 – 1956.

Doc started his Veterinary career in Crawfordsville in 1960 where he was partners with Dr. James Jewell. He worked as a Veterinarian for 32 years, where he had a large animal practice in Crawfordsville, until his retirement in 1992. Following his retirement he enjoyed helping the McAllister family with their farming operation. He belonged to the Eastern Iowa Veterinary Medicine Association, the American Veterinary Medicine Association and the American Association of Swine Practitioners.

Doc lived most of his life in Crawfordsville before moving to Washington in 1994. While living in Crawfordsville he belonged to the United Church of Crawfordsville where he was an elder of the church. He served on the building committee for the construction of the new church in Crawfordsville. He was a former member of the Lions Club in Crawfordsville. He was a member of the United Presbyterian Church in Washington, Iowa.

He was an avid sports fan. He participated and coached with the Wyman and Crawfordsville softball teams. He enjoyed golfing and was a proud supporter of Iowa and Iowa State athletics.

Doc is survived by his wife Betty Gipple of Washington, Iowa; daughter, Cindy Conrad and husband, Doran of Wayland, Iowa; two grandchildren: Kendra Bailey and husband, Jace and their children, Bryce and Kale of Riverside, Iowa; and Camron Conrad and wife, Leah of Harrisonburg, Virginia; one brother, Roger Gipple and wife, Janet of Columbus Junction, Iowa; and one sister-in-law, Nancy Gipple Fotsch of Solon, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one daughter, Coleen Gipple in 1979, one brother, Richard Gipple in 1980, and one niece, Jennifer (Gipple) Freeman in 2007.
