Thelma Irene Coon, age 90 of Columbus Junction, died Tuesday April 7, 2009 at the Colonial Manor. The daughter of Thomas Henry and Inez (Springsteen) Bice, she was born September 29, 1918 east of Winfield. On January 31, 1942 she married Alfred “Junior” Coon at Morning Sun; he died in January of 1992. She was a graduate of the Winfield High School and took a teaching course at Iowa Wesleyan College. She taught at Virginia Grove School. She was a former member of the Morning Sun Presbyterian Church, where she taught Sunday school and was active in the Presbyterian Women. She was a former 4-H leader, active in the Louisa County Farm Bureau Women, and had been a volunteer at Colonial Manor. When the couple moved to Columbus Junction in 1991 she joined the United Presbyterian Church in Columbus Junction, where she was active in church related organizations.

Survivors include: one daughter, Judy Chapman of Conesville; one son, Don Coon of Cedar Rapids; seven grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson; two sisters-in-law, Dorothy Bice of Arizona and Helen Young of Eldridge, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and one brother, Elbert Bice.

The funeral service was Friday, April 10, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at the Columbus Junction United Presbyterian Church, with Rev. Faye Fedlam officiating. The family met with friends from 10-11:00 prior to the service. A luncheon followed at the church for family and friends. Interment was at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Elmwood Cemetery in Morning Sun. Memorials have been established for the Morning Sun and Columbus Junction Presbyterian Churches.
