Richard W. ‘Dick’ Brockett, age 84, of Letts, Iowa, died Tuesday morning, March 3, 2009, at the Wapello Nursing and Rehab Center at Wapello. The son of Leslie and Gertrude Sylvester Brocket, he was born on January 20, 1925 at Eliza, Illinois. He married Wynonnia Blake. On July 6, 1963 he married Janice (Anthony) Long at Aledo, Illinois.

Dick had worked as a produce manager for BenTeaCo. He was a farmhand and had owned and operated a gas station at Letts. He then worked for several years caring for the buildings and grounds at the Letts Consolidated Schools and L & M School retiring in 1990. He then worked for Chown Appliance at Nichols and then an additional twelve years for the Grimm Bros. Plastics in Wapello. Dick simply loved to work and could always find something to do.

In early years he enjoyed racing jalopies. He continued to enjoy car races especially NASCAR.

He was a member of the Walnut Park Baptist Church in Muscatine.

Dick is survived by his wife, Janice; his seven children, Cathy and Mike Bewley of LeClaire, Patrick Brockett of Maquoketa, Peggy and Jerry Waack of Elizabeth, West Virginia, Sherril and Greg Gappa of Crystal, Minnesota, Jeffery Long of Pagosa Springs, Colorado, Rick and Sue Brockett of Topeka, Kansas, and Molly and Chris Osmun of Newton; ten grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; and two brothers, Robert Brocket of Muscatine and Clifford Brocket of Cambridge, Illinois and Mesa, Arizona. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Frances.

The funeral ceremony for Dick Brockett was held at 1:00 PM on Friday, March 6, 2009, at the Walnut Park Baptist Church at Muscatine. Pastor Dennis Hakes and Rev. Darryl Erickson officiated. Burial followed at the Letts Cemetery. The family and friends gathered for a light luncheon and fellowship at 11:30 AM before the funeral at the church.

Friends called after noon on Thursday at the Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home at Wapello where the family met friends from 6:00 to 8:00 PM.

A Memorial Fund has been established for the benefits of the Walnut Park Baptist Church, the Grandview Community Bible Church, and the Iowa City Hospice.
