Geraldine Meeker Schomberg, 96, of Letts, Iowa, died Friday, August 6, 2010, at Trinity Hospital of Muscatine.

Visitation was held on Sunday, August 15th from 4-7:00 p.m. at the Stacy-Lewis Funeral Home in Columbus Junction. Funeral services were Monday, August 16, 2010, at 10:30 a.m. at the Letts United Methodist Church. Pastor Collette Gould officiated. Casket bearers were Bill Brown, Gary Hafner, Mike O’Toole, Greg Padgett, Dick Lee and Tim Nichols. Honorary casket bearers were Riley Padgett, Chet Hafner, Robert Gann and Jim Rebhuhn. Burial was in the Greenwood Cemetery, Muscatine. Following the committal there will be a time of food and fellowship at the Zion Lutheran Church in Muscatine. Memorials may be directed to the Letts United Methodist Church, the Food Pantry of Louisa County or World Neighbors in Geraldine’s name. Geraldine was born January 25, 1914, near Cranston in Muscatine County, the daughter of Wilbur Ernest and Effie A. (Shires) Meeker. She graduated from Muscatine High School and attended Junior College and Parsons College to become a certified elementary teacher. She taught at Star School in Lake Township of Muscatine County for three years. On August 14, 1935, she was united in marriage to Frederick Max “Ted” Schomberg at the Meeker home near Cranston. Geraldine and her husband farmed together for sixty-three years, and she continued the farm operation after his death in 1998. She was a member of the Letts United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women. Geraldine was an active member and leader in 4-H for many years, and she was a charter member of the Letts Federated Club and belonged to Chapter T of T.T.T., the Farm Bureau Federation and the Cedar-O-Six Homemakers. She also sang in a small vocal group, Women of Note.

Geraldine is survived by her children: Steven Frederick Schomberg and wife, Janie of Iowa City, Judith Carlson and husband, Carl of Battle Lake, MN and Nancy Abney and husband, Glenn of Tucker, GA; six grandchildren: John Schomberg and wife, Ellen Wheeler of Chicago, IL, Laura Jacobus and husband, James of Iowa City, Donovan Carlson and wife, Susan of Hudson, WI, Sara Comstock and husband, Scott of Muscatine, Carol Quinn and husband, Brian of Chattanooga, TN and Kimberly Neville and husband, Jon of Atlanta, GA; ten great-grandchildren: Jacob and Rachel Schomberg, Max and Alex Jacobus, Laura and Anna Comstock, Connor and Michael Quinn and Andrew and Emma Neville. Also surviving is her sister, Martha Jean Nichols of West Liberty.

Geraldine was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her brother, Joseph Meeker, three sisters-in-law and their husbands, Florence (Dell) Raymond, Louise (John) Padgett and Kathryn (Robert) Goddard, and brother-in-law, Donald Nichols.
