Ross Arthur ‘Butch’ Elkin, age 63, of Wapello, Iowa, died Saturday night, May 1, 2010, at his home after a long battle with cancer with his family at his side. Born May 25, 1946 at Oskaloosa, Iowa, he was the son of Marion and Fern Messer Howell. On July 28, 1969 he married Karen Brockway in Mediapolis, Iowa.

He was employed by Natural Gas Pipeline for 30 years working in maintenance. After retiring he then worked as a truck driver for Hook Grain.

Ross attended Columbus Community Schools. He was an Army Veteran of the Vietnam War. He was a member of the Southeast Iowa Ducks Unlimited.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and sports; especially watching his grandchildren’s sporting events. He enjoyed camping with his family, “The Mississippi Gang”.

His survivors include his wife, Karen; his son, Brent Elkin of Conway, Missouri; his daughter, Niki (Tim) Slutts of Mediapolis; three grandsons, Derrick and Dakota Slutts of Mediapolis and Hunter Elkin of Conway, Missouri; three sisters, Sandy Lapour of Marshalltown, Linda (Ed) Wheeler of Rockwell City, and Terri (Larry) Fitchner of Conesville; a brother Tom (Janice) Howell of Washington; several brother-in-laws and sister-in-laws; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his mother and father.

Tuesday May 4, 2010 at the Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home in Wapello family met with friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m..

Funeral service for Ross Elkin will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, May 5, 2010, at the Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home with Rev. Sue-Ellen Sherman officiating.

There will be a private graveside service at a later date.

A memorial fund has been established for the benefit of the Iowa City Hospice.
