Mildred E. Sands, age 87, of Washington died Thursday May 27, 2010, at Halcyon House in Washington following a lengthy illness.

Celebration of life services were held at 10:30 am on Tuesday June 1, 2010 at the Jones - Eden Funeral Home in Washington with Rev. Kitch Shazter officiating. Visitation began at 12:00 pm Monday at the Jones - Eden Funeral Home where the family received friends from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Monday. Interment took place at Oregon Township Cemetery in Ainsworth. Memorials have been established for Cotter Presbyterian Church and Salem Welsh Presbyterian Church. Online condolences may be sent for

Mildred was born on April 3, 1923 in Washington the daughter of Howard Everette and Versa Mae (Chadwick) Anderson. She attended school in Washington until the eighth grade. She graduated from Crawfordsville High School in 1941 and attended the University of Iowa College of Nursing. Mildred was united in marriage to Donald Frank “Don” Sands on November 1, 1943 in Albany, Georgia. Mildred worked with her husband in the family farming operation. She was a member of the Cotter Presbyterian Church in Cotter, the Cotter Guild, and the White Cloud Organization. Mildred enjoyed quilting, collecting antiques, presenting antiques at county fairs, and gardening.

Mildred is survived by her daughter, Pat Moyer of Washington; son, Frank Sands of Columbus Junction; son, Tim Sands and wife, Julie of Conesville; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; sisters, Leah Foster of Davenport, Iowa and Nancilee Johnson of Fairfield Bay, Arkansas.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 1994; one sister, Phyllis Carter; and three brothers-in-law: Robert Carter, John Foster and Gordon Johnson.
