Virgie Ross, age 92 of Winfield, died Sunday evening February 28, 2010 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City.

The daughter of Charles and Bessie (Latta) Feldman, she was born December 30, 1917, near Winfield. On October 23, 1935 she married Gerald Ross; he died April 27, 1974. She was a graduate of the Winfield High School, class of 1934. She helped her husband farm for 22 years, operated the Corner Café in Columbus Junction, and helped her husband operate Cedar Crest Golf Course, before moving to Winfield to operate the Twin Lakes Golf Course from 1966-71. She and Gerald moved to Ames, where Gerald was Superintendant of Homewood Golf Course. Following his death, Virgie continued to work as Superintendant, becoming Iowa’s first lady Superintendant. She was a member of the National and Iowa Golf Course Supt. Association. She was a member of the Winfield United Methodist Church.

Survivors include: one daughter, Anita Peters and husband Dan of Winfield; 3 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandson; one sister, Wahneetah Hamilton of Winfield; nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one daughter, Claudia, one granddaughter and one great granddaughter.

The funeral service will be held Thursday March 4, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. at the Honts Funeral Home in Winfield; interment will follow at the Winfield-Scott Township Cemetery.

Friends may call on Wednesday from 1-7:00 p.m. at the Honts Funeral Home in Winfield, there will be no family visitation.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for Sunrise Terrace Care Center Activity Fund.
