Patricia was born on January 29, 1928, to Howard and Marie Plessey Carl in Casper, Wyoming, where she won the most beautiful baby of the year contest. The Carl family returned to Muscatine when she was a toddler. She attended St. Mathias schools, graduating in 1946

Prior to her marriage she worked in a clerical position at Swifts Poultry Company in Muscatine.

Pat married Francis Edward Carroll on October 2, 1948 in Muscatine and they started their farm life together near Grandview. Francis died May 26, 1977, after 29 years of marriage. Following his death, Pat completed a clerical course at Muscatine Community College. Starting in fall of 1978, Pat spent 19 years working at Louisa-Muscatine Junior High, where she enjoyed interacting with kids, punching lunch tickets, and opening lockers, working in the library, but most of all greeting student with compassion and an enthusiasm for learning.

Prior to her retirement in 1977, she ensured that all of her children achieved their desired education. Pat instilled in her family a value for learning, having three children and three daughters-in-law who became educators. Coincidently Pat and Francis raised their family in a home that was previously a country schoolhouse. Achieving her goal of seeing her children educated, Pat retired to enjoy travel with her sisters and family members around the country, with numerous trips abroad.

Pat’s greatest gift to her family was her nurturing nature, which she demonstrated through activities such as two decades as a 4-H leader and years of church activities at St. Mathias Church. She was blessed with many friends in the Grandview Federated Club, where she was one of the charter members, the Grandview Community Club and served several years as a Hospice Volunteer. Along with Francis, she was involved with many Louisa County Farm Bureau activities. She always recognized the value of every person she met, and this will be greatly missed by her family.
