Lois Houseal, 89, of Columbus Junction, Iowa, died Thursday. February 25, 2010 at the Colonial Manor Care Center in Columbus Junction.

Funeral services were Sunday, February 28, 2010, at 2:00 p.m. at the Stacy-Lewis Home for Funeral and Cremation Services in Columbus Junction. Pastor Rick Hughes of Pleasant Grove Community Church officiated. Casket bearers were Steve Schlichting, Lora Deckard, Kevin Morgan, Jim Bruns, Lee Foster and Brent Houseal. Honorary casket bearers were James Crawford, Justin Schlichting, Lewis Dallmeyer and David Goble. Burial will be in Indian Creek Cemetery.

Visitation was held Sunday, February 28th, from 1:00-2:00 p.m. at the Stacy-Lewis Home for Funeral and Cremation Services. After the committal there was a time of refreshments and fellowship for friends and family at the Columbus Community Senior Center. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established at the funeral home in Lois’ name. Online condolences may be left to the Houseal family at www.lewisfuneralhomes.com.

Lois Schlichting was born December 12, 1920, in Louisa County, Iowa, the daughter of John A. and Nellie I. (Johnston) Schlichting. On September 1, 1949, Lois was united in marriage to James “Ken” Houseal in Columbus Junction. Lois was a life long resident of Louisa County and a member of Pleasant Grove Community Church. She was employed as a secretary at Howell Insurance for 19 years and worked as a clerk at the Columbus Junction State Bank for 19 years.

With her husband, Ken, Lois owned and operated Houseal Construction Company for 28 years. Lois was an active volunteer at the Colonial Manor Care Center in Columbus Junction. She was also a member of Emma Beckman Chapter 445 of the Order of Eastern Star, the Etude Club and of the Pleasant Grove Ladies Aide, also serving as church treasurer since 1955 and church organist.

Lois will be dearly missed by her brother, John A. Schlichting and his wife, Ramona of Springfield, MO; her nephew, Steven A. Schlichting of Springfield, MO; niece, Lora Deckard of Tulsa, OK; nephew, Justin Schlichting of Conesville, IA; nieces, Cathy Crawford and Carla Bruns, both of Columbus Junction; nephews, Kevin Morgan of Columbus Junction, Kyle Morgan of Carlisle, IA and Jim Houseal of Davenport; niece, Judy Houseal of Phoenix, AZ; nephews, Brad Houseal, Brent Houseal and Brian Houseal, all of Burlington; several great nieces and nephews; and several great-great nieces and nephews.

Lois was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Ken in 1993; and three brothers, Cecil, Glenn and Walter Schlichting.
