Gary R. Pickering

Gary Robert Pickering, 65, of rural Wapello, Iowa, died Sunday morning, November 16, 2009 at his home. The son of Glenn and Elva Cook Pickering, he was born on February 15, 1944 at Yankton, South Dakota.

He married Maureen Kay ‘Mitzi’ Senner on August 12, 1967 at Freeman, South Dakota. She died on April 12, 1979, Gary married Judi M. (Bence) Riddle on August 2, 1980 at Oakville, Iowa.

He taught at the Anthon – Otto School in Northwest Iowa and then career taught Social Studies at the Wapello High School. He also coached girls track and boys and girls cross country. He retired after this last school year.

Mr. Pickering had been a member and active with the Wapello Education Association and National Education Association and had been a member and past regional president of the Iowa State Education Association.

Gary was a great gardener and enjoyed sharing his produce with others. He also enjoyed caring for his year and enjoyed fishing.

His family includes his wife, Judi; his daughter, Brandii, and Aaron Wherry of Bakersfield, California; a brother, Kenneth and Lavonne Pickering of Pierre, South Dakota; and a sister, Carol and Doug Schulz of Lincoln, Nebraska.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his first wife, Mitzi.

The funeral service for Gary Pickering will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, November 19, 2009, at the Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home in Wapello with Pastor Dan Doolin officiating. Burial will follow at the Aspen Grove Cemetery at Burlington.

Visitation was Wednesday at the Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home where the family met with friends from 4 to 7 p.m.

A memorial fund has been established.
