Charlotte A. GibsonCharlotte Ann Gibson, PhD, age 80 of Morning Sun, Iowa, died Tuesday morning, October 20, 2009, at the Morning Sun Care Center. The daughter of L.R. and Gertrude Kauffman Pierce, she was born on November 6, 1928 at Burlington, Iowa.
Charlotte graduated from Morning Sun High School in 1946 and graduated from Monmouth College with a BA in music. She taught school in the foreign countries of Turkey and Holland and when returning to the US she taught in locations in Utah and California. She then taught at Western Illinois University of Macomb in Early Childhood Development. In the late 1970s she completed her PhD in Early Childhood Development from the University of Southern California. She worked for a number of years and retired from the A.E.A. #16 as an Early Childhood Development Consultant.
Charlotte was a member of the United Presbyterian Church at Morning Sun, the P.E.O. Chapter E.T., had served on the Morning Sun School Board and had been a church choir director for a number of years. She was an accomplished pianist having played in churches and as the accompanist for the Keck Singers. She enjoyed reading, her cats, including Blitzen, her plants, traveling, and her family, especially her nephews and their families.
Her family includes her brother, Leroy Pierce of Morning Sun; three nephews, David and Carol Pierce of Morning Sun, Dwight and Barbie pierce of Conway, Arkansas, and Curtis and Linda Pierce of Columbus Junction; seven great nieces and nephews, Cole and Melissa Pierce, Tiffany, Jared, Livia, Sam, Justin and Rachel Pierce and three great-great nieces and nephews, Ethan, Adel and Cain.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister-in-law, Nancy Pierce.
The funeral service for Charlotte Gibson will be held at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, October 24, 2009 at the United Presbyterian Church at Morning Sun with the Rev. Ron Good officiating. Burial will follow in the Elmwood Cemetery.
Friends may call after noon on Friday at the Hagele and Honts Funeral Home in Morning Sun where the family will meet friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.
A memorial fund has been established for the benefit of a piano fund for the new Morning Sun Community Center.
