M. Elmira Whitaker

M. Elmira Whitaker, 89, Oakville, died Friday morning, May 9, 2003, at the Morning Sun Care Center. The daughter of Edwin and Florence Watson Bishop, she was born October 25, 1913, near Mediapolis. She married Hilbert E. Whitaker on May 1, 1937, in Burlington.

Elmira graduated from Mediapolis High School, received her Normal Training and then taught school for three years at Lone Star near Oakville. In later years she worked as a Certified Nurse Aide at the Klein Nursing & Rehab Center in Burlington for 12 years.

She had attended the Church of God, Holiness at Oakville and had taught Sunday School for 58 years until her health failed. She loved doing things for others, especially quilting and sewing for her family.

She is survived by her husband; two sons, David and Minnie Whitaker of Oakville and Dale and Kathie Whitaker of Oakville; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Vera Whitaker of Oakville.

She was preceded in death by her parents and an infant brother.

The funeral service for Elmira Whitaker was held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home in Wapello with pastor Maurice Moore officiating. Music was provided by Bety Hallam, organist, and John and Sarah Whitaker, vocalists. Flower attendants were Sherri Whitaker, Cyndie Whitaker, Sarah Whitaker and Tonya Whitaker. Pallbearers were Doug Whitaker, Joe Whitaker, Monica Gugeler, Joe Whitaker, Lance Whitaker, Rebekah Waddal, Allen Gugeler and Jason Waddell.

Burial followed at Edwards Cemetery, rural Oakville with pastor Brent Smith officiating.

Visitation was Monday at the funeral home, where the family met with friends in the evening.

A memorial fund has been established for the benefit of the Oakville Fire & Rescue.
