ANOTHER PIONEER FINISHED COURSE
Elijah Stephens Passed Away Saturday
Mr. Stephens Was Near HIs Seventy-Sixth Birthday - Had Lived In This Community For Many Years.
Elijah Stephens passed away at 6 o'clock Saturday evening, March 31, at the home of his sister-in-law, Mrs. David Stephens, after two years of failing health.
Uncle Elijah was born in Canada, April 25, 1839, and came to this county in his early manhood. He was never married but lived on a little farm near Wapello by himself for a number of years. Later he sold it and bought a home in North Wapello, where he lived until about six years ago, when he went to live with his brother, David, now deceased. For three years he remained there, later going to Grandview to live with a niece and nephew. Early this spring he returned to the farm to live with his sister-in-law, and nephew and died in their home.
Deceased is survived by five nieces, Mrs. J.M. Guthrie and Wm. McLaughlin of Wapello, Mrs. Geo. Cocklin of Grandview, Mrs. Robt. Utter of Muscatine, and Mrs. Lydia Graville, of Randolph, Wis.; three nephews, Jesse Stephens of Muscatine, and Chet and Glen Stephens of Grandview; one brother, Roswell Stephens, of Wapello, and two sisters residing in Canada.
The funeral was held in this city Monday afternoon from the home of his niece, Mrs. J.M. Guthrie, conducted by J.R. Hammond. Interment was made in the Wapello cemetery.
