Obituary

Mary J. Kauffman was born in Dauphin county, Pennsylvania, September 29, 1839; died January 14, 1902, at her home in Grandview, Iowa. She came with her parents to Louisa County in 1851 and was united in marriage to Henry Thompson January 14, 1855. To this union was born eight children, four sons and four daughters. The husband and five children survive -- Mrs. A. K. Lindsey, of Muscatine; A. B. Thompson of Cedar Rapids, Nebraska; J. A. Thompson of Louisa County; J. C. Thompson of Santa Paula, California; and W. H. Thompson of Grandview, Iowa. Three daugters -- Sarah L., Josephine and Mattie preceded her to the home above. Her aged mother, Mrs. L. Kauffman of Santa Paula, California; one brother, A. A. Kauffman of Red Bluff, California; and one sister, Mrs. B. F. Thompson of Santa Clara, California also survive to mourn her loss. Mrs. Thompson united with the Church of God about the year 1857 and led a true and consistent Christian life. She was a kind and loving mother.

The funeral sermon was delivered by M. G. Hamil, Thursday, January 16, in the M. E. Church. A large concourse of relatives and friends were present at the funeral ceremonies, and the remains were interred in the Thompson Cemetery. The pall bearers were: R. C. Vibber, Chas. King, A. H. Young, C. Deitricht, M. Guthrie, and B. Christy.
